With New Years resolutions surfacing, it can be easy to look forward at this time of year and decide what changes we are going to make to ensure that 2016 is better than 2015. However, before you tip into the promise of a new year, take a moment to reflect on the highlights of 2015.
This kind of positive reflection can remind us of all of the wonderful things we have in our lives already before focusing on the gaps to plug in the New Year. Some people do this in the form of a gratitude journal, others may use savouring techniques to squeeze the second juice from an experience past. In either case, we can all benefit from sparing a few minutes before the countdown, to count up our best bits of 2015. Think back month-by-month (my memory is better jolted by having a calendar to look back through) and remind yourself of experiences that were exciting, caring, humbling, loving, pivotal, subtle, enjoyable or inspiring.
One of my new years resolutions is to make this positive reflection a habit, not just to be enjoyed on New Year Eve, but all year long. I will be keeping a jar labelled “Highlights of 2016” and will fill it with written memories as they happen throughout the year. At the end of the year, I will take out my highlights and remind myself of them. This way, fewer of the good times slip through my memory net. I invite you to do the same.
Happy Old Year!
